What is Open Farm Day?
Open Farm Day has been held since 2010 offering Manitobans the occasion to come and tour a farm, a business and/or experience agri-tourism. The event presents people with a learning opportunity to ask farmers questions about their farm, talk with those in the agriculture industry who provide support and information to farmers, other agriculture entrepreneurs and to communicate with those involved in the agri-tourism business.
The city and surrounding community of Portage La Prairie will have four diverse and informative Open Farm Day Host Sites available for those interested to tour.
The sites include: Shur-Gro Farm Services; Food Development Centre; Farm Away and Verwey Farms.
Shur-Gro Farm Services believes in providing farmers/growers with the services they need. This includes fertilizer and crop production information and services, seed or custom services. Shur-Gro has a number of guiding principles including: customer importance, employee wellness and family, integrity, community and environmental stewardship promoting practices to ensure the sustainability of agriculture. Participants will be given a tour of the Shur-Gro facilities and learn more about the services provided by this Manitoba business.
Food Development Centre located in Portage La Prairie is a research and development facility equipped to help small and large food and beverage businesses, processors and new entrepreneurs who want professional help to successfully develop a food product. Tours of the facility and lab areas i.e. work done in partnership with the Canadian Institute of Food Science and Technology will be offered.
Farm Away is an agri-tourism business featuring custom farm tours, equine assisted learning and Ag education. The site of an original family homestead, situated on a scenic piece of prairie land; Farm Away is a Bed & Breakfast (for families or individuals); a custom Special Events venue; and a Meeting/Training location. Activities will include tours of the property, meet & greet the EAL team and livestock.
Verwey Farms is a Dairy, Grain and Beef Farm – tours of the dairy barn will include opportunity to see where the cows and calves live, how the barn works and how cows are milked plus other information and activities. Weather dependent – harvesting may be underway and there will be an opportunity to view combines and trucks out in the fields.
